Movies and books always have quotes that we use on our daily conversations to feel powerful or as mantras to better our moods. They also help in making us believe in ourselves when we stop believing, but a favorite one of mine is the last quote in the movie called “Uptown Girls” with Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning.

This movie tells the tale of a twenty-some year old that has lived a reckless, spoiled life since her parents passed away and left her an inheritance big enough for her to not worry about a single thing, but all of the sudden she goes bankrupt and to make ends meet she becomes the babysitter of a perfectionist, realistic, eight-year- old.

Murphy’s character learns a lot from Fanning and vice versa, which reminds the audience that even though change can be scary, that is what life is all about. It’s about rejoicing in the little things and putting a brave face when presented with a tough situation, and handling it like a pro.

The movie finishes with the quote, “Every story has an end, but in life, every ending is just a new beginning.” As cliché as it sounds, it is definitely true. Life can throw you curve balls that you will want to miss, but hitting them back is almost, always the better option. Change is inevitably scary. This is a fact, it causes some of us anxiety and it is exciting and exhilarating for others, nevertheless change makes us feel something in our gut whether it is good or bad.

But the one thing we must not do is fear it. Like another great early 2000’s movie says “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game,” this said by Hilary Duff in A Cinderella Story.

If we allow fear to control our every step, we allow it to control our lives, and with fear you will never experience what is unknown, because it will always feel scary.

There is no way to know whether a decision was good or bad until actually going ahead and doing what felt overbearing. So, every time something feels scary, think of all the other times you were afraid of change and how you overcame that feeling. Life is too short to be cautious all the time, show change that you can handle it at any time and at any day.
